U/17 TEAM

FIFA recognises U17 as the first age group for boys for the purpose of playing a World Championship. Tournaments are played every 2 years with New Zealand playing amongst the Oceania nations to find a representative from the OFC. The next tournament is scheduled for 2005 with OFC qualifying to be confirmed.

New Zealand shocked the nation and the world with the hugely successful hosting of the 1999 FIFA U17 World Championships. Teams from around the world headed to New Zealand and the focus of the soccer world and local media turned to the beautiful game. The tournament proved a big hit, on and off the park. Matches were full of brilliant and entertaining football from the future stars of the game. And the crowds loved it, turning out in their thousands to watch, including a capacity 24,000 for the tournament final. New Zealand played their part too, missing the quarter finals by a narrow margin but in the process picking up New Zealand's only ever point in a FIFA Finals Tournament in the memorable 2-1 win over Poland.
